UK Offshore Oil and Gas Industry Cleaning Up its Act?

UK Oil & Gas, a representative body for the offshore industry, has captured environmental performance of the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry in a report according to which the industry seems to be cleaning up its act.

Namely, overall trends of emissions, discharges and accidental releases by the UK oil and gas industry continue to decline.

The organization’s Oil & Gas UK Environment Report 2015, launched on Wednesday at the Oil & Gas UK Environment Seminar, contains information up to the end of 2014.

The environmental performance of UK offshore oil and gas industry is captured via measurements of emissions to the atmosphere, discharges, waste releases and accidental oil and chemical releases.

Mick Borwell, environment director at Oil & Gas UK, said: “In general, overall trends in emissions, discharges and accidental releases continue to head in the right direction. This is due to a combination of careful management, significant investment in physical barriers, the provision of training in human behaviour and handling. 2014 saw the smallest mass of accidental oil releases on record at just under 20 tonnes, which is less than one percent of the total oil production for the whole of last year. There was also a reduction in the mass of chemicals accidentally released.”

Borwell also noted that emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and methane had steadily decreased since 2000.
