Operator Classes Partial Finger Amputation as Medical Treatment Injury

An electrical tech working on the CNR Ninian Platfrom lost the tip of his right index finger in a freak accident with a pressurised door.

The accident happened on Sunday the 6 th of March but it is thought the IP was kept onboard and only returned to shore for treatment on the regular crew change flight the following day.

The incident report which Oil and Gas People has seen says: “IP Suffered a traumatic finger injury to his right index finger whilst opening the pressure equalisation side and the B standby generator compartment door. IP lost the tip of his right index finger during the incident as a result of his finger being trapped between the pressure equalisation plate and the door recess.”

The incident report also states that the accident has been recorded as a medical treatment injury. Offshore workers were quick to criticise the classification in an earlier news post suggesting that the incident should have instead been classed as a Lost time incident and the IP Medevaced from the platform.

In a similar incident on a BG platform last year the coastguard was called to perform an immediate Medevac.

A Spokeswoman for CNR issued this statement: “CNR International (U.K.) Limited can confirm that on March 6, 2016 an individual suffered a trapped finger injury on Ninian Central.

“Routine medical treatment was provided by the medic on-board the platform. In consultation with medical personnel onshore, the individual was placed on the next available helicopter to Aberdeen for further assessment and treatment to the tip of the finger.”
